New Friends at The Roastery, Shibuya

DSCF1126

There are so many good coffee specialty places these days we are getting way too spoilt for choice. Most of these coffee specialists boast swank interior design, top-of-the-range equipment and most certainly all sorts of single origin arabica royalty. But every once in a while, you stumble upon one which has all of the above…and more. Continue reading

Jack Dreams of Sushi Sho

Prawn

Hello all! I am finally awake from my slumber. If you like nice food, you might know of Chubby Hubby. I am a fan of his blog. He eats well, he writes well, his pictures are pretty, and I also really trust his taste. Some months ago, he declared Keiji Nakazawa of Sushi Sho the best sushi chef in the world. That was a huge compliment paid. And truly well deserved I found out. Continue reading

Alba White Truffle Fair

The Langhe region of Piedmont, famous for Barolo wines

Alba, in Piedmont, is Italy’s white truffle mecca and main market. My trip to Europe this year had one main intention – The White Truffle Fair in Alba. Each weekend of the month-and-a-half long fair in October and November every year draws thousands of visitors by the bus loads into this charming town; everyone with the common objective of indulging in white truffles and the region’s cuisine and wines. White Diamonds, Alba, Italy

Much like mold, with a crush of garlic, tossed in newly ploughed soil and kissed by burrowing earthworms, a scent so bewildering yet so intoxicating I would gladly wear as a perfume. The aroma of the white truffle, Tuber magnatum, one of the most expensive foods in the world, is simply heavenly.

Foldable Love

Urban cycling has taken a stylish turn. From utilitarian city bikes, to mechanically efficient fixies to ultra-compact foldies, clever designing and technological improvements have turned what used to be clunky, sluggish and old-fashioned bicycles into lean mean machines of high performance. Works of art that put cool into laid-back urban cycling.

Folding bikes, or “foldies” as they are affectionately known, have been spinning up a storm in Singapore in recent years (albeit of late, a storm of the nasty kind). We visit a popular lifestyle bike shop LifeCycle to check out these gorgeous bicycles that are garnering such a strong fan base in Singapore. Continue reading

Albania: “New Mediterranean Love” Part 2

Perhaps not so much of a secret anymore, the stretch of beach in south Albania facing the Ionian Coast is a Club Med-ish paradise. Read that there are plans for the resort chain to set up one soon, which would just mean prices will sky rocket as more foreign tourists stream in. Already in the past decade, the scene has changed drastically as restaurants and guesthouses line the beaches, aided in part by the new mountainous road joining Vlora to Saranda that follows the coast, making it accessible for anyone whose stomachs can take a bit of motion sickness. Albania: “New Mediterranean Love” Part 1

Truth be told, when I first met my boyfriend about a year ago and he told me he was from Albania, I was trying hard not to let my face give away my cluelessness about the country. Where? Oh, next to Greece? Ahh okay..Mediterranean. Not that I’m all that familiar with the Mediterranean, other than hummus. And couscous! 😛 Continue reading

Mumbai, City of Dreams

Colonial relics and modern high-rise, mayhem and order, flashy and modest, rich and poor. They all have a place in a city called Mumbai. A city that pulsates to the rhythm of your heart as you dodge two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers from all directions; it’s a place you will need to see, smell and hear to fully experience. I got to spend a day in Mumbai, this restless, turbo-charged city where millions chase their dreams. Continue reading

The Faces of Dhobi Ghat, Mumbai

Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai is the world’s largest outdoor laundry. Mundane as it may sound, this is a fascinating industry where Mumbai’s traditional washerfolk (“dhobis”) engages tirelessly in an invaluable service for the city – collecting dirty laundry, washing it, and returning it neatly pressed. We take a look at this amazing trade and the faces behind the activities. Continue reading
